English percussion bar hammer 40 cal transition pistol

An early example of the English transition revolver circa 1850
This pistol  appears to be the work of Richard Cutler & Son, Birmingham gunmakers from 1848-1858 at 26 Weaman Street. The barrel is engraved “…tler, London”  with the cylinder carrying Birmingham inspection marks.

The transitional revolver morphed from the pepperbox but by the late 1850’s  was being superceded by revolvers by Colt, Smith & Wesson, Webley etc.

Our model features an engraved  six shot unfluted cylinder retaining fading blue. The 121mm octagonal barrel has a silver foresight. The frame, backstrap, guard and hammer are extensively engraved with acanthus foliate.

Overall condition is good, making this model a worthwhile  piece for the revolver collector.
